482 million people flood to Pinterest each month to find new ideas, DIY projects, fashion inspiration, and more! Pinterest can be a great marketing tool and is arguably NOT social media, which might surprise you. Rather, it’s a visual discovery engine (think Google) that is an entirely different beast of its own. Below we are discussing if your business could benefit from being on the platform and what to expect from using Pinterest.
I actually firmly believe that some businesses do NOT need to invest time or money in Pinterest while other businesses DEFINITELY should.
It’s actually quite simple to figure out. If traffic to your own website is a revenue driver/beneficial to you, then Pinterest is going to be your new best friend! If you do not have a website, do not actively post to your website, or don’t see profits coming from viewers clicking on your website then Pinterest is not where I would put my focus.
For example, if you have a blog with ads, every new page viewer means dollars for you. This type of business model especially thrives by using Pinterest. Or, if your blog houses affiliate links and the more people reading your blog posts means more people shopping your links, then Pinterest might also be a great fit.
Pinterest would NOT be a good investment if you bring revenue in strictly from Instagram sponsorships, affiliate sales coming only from social media, etc. The link you include on Pinterest should be your own website (they do allow LTK links, Amazon, etc. but those pins won’t be distributed as easily or as widely). However, to remedy this a lot of bloggers will post their affiliate links in a blog and link the actual blog post on Pinterest. You can still upload your collage/graphics but link to the blog post instead of LTK directly. This is a great work around.
In short, if you have your own website and are actively looking for increased paged views/more traffic, Pinterest marketing is a great avenue to invest in. If you don’t actively use your own website or do not have one, I’d personally skip on utilizing Pinterest!
If you aren’t experienced with Pinterest, there are a few things to be aware of.
First, Pinterest is a long-term platform. This means unlike Instagram and Facebook, pins circulate for months and years after being published. In fact, Pinterest actually prefers older, more well established content. It takes 3-6 months to start seeing any results at all from Pinterest, and I’d argue 6 months to 1 year to see significant results.
Pins just take longer to get ranked, coded, and distributed by the algorithms. But, after the initial leg work of consistently uploading, you will see the benefits for years. For example, on one of my client accounts, a pin about Halloween costume ideas for couples that was pinned in 2019 was circulating still in 2023 as one of her highest ranked pins yielding hundreds of page views alone this past October.
Pinterest will also fluctuate. One month you may finally reach 10,000 outbound clicks, and the next month only hit 7,000. As long as the general direction of the account is growth, expect fluctuations.
Pinterest is also a HEAVY SEO platform. Each pin takes more than a pretty design or image to get pushed into the algorithm. Specific keywords need to be researched and incorporated in the title, description, and board!
If you are a blogger in any of the main Pinterest niches (fashion, style, food, skincare, beauty, home, interior design, etc.) and upload at least a couple of new blog posts per month, then Pinterest can be a fantastic marketing tool for you to use. Investing in a Pinterest manager who knows how to properly optimize boards, your account, and research trending keywords can take the load off your plate so you can get back to creating the content you love!
